Why Over 85% of Coating Failures Stem from Poor Surface Preparation

A resin floor is only as strong as the concrete substrate beneath it. Liquid epoxy cannot adhere to weak surface laitance, curing compounds, grease, or polished concrete cream. To achieve a permanent, non-delaminating bond, the concrete surface must be mechanically profiled according to International Concrete Repair Institute (ICRI) Guideline No. 310.2R.

Acid etching (using muriatic or hydrochloric acid) introduces severe project risks: (1) it introduces massive amounts of water into the slab, causing delayed moisture blistering; (2) unreacted acid salts remain in concrete pores, weakening the epoxy bond; (3) acid fumes severely corrode electrical panels, structural steel, and nearby machinery; and (4) it cannot open dense power-troweled concrete. We use 100% dust-free mechanical shot blasting and diamond grinding.

ASTM D4541 measures the direct perpendicular tensile strength of the concrete surface. A 50mm aluminum dolly is epoxied to the prepared slab, isolated by core drilling, and pulled using a calibrated hydraulic tester. For heavy industrial epoxy flooring, the concrete must achieve at least 1.5 to 2.0 MPa tensile strength, with failure occurring inside the concrete aggregate rather than at the bond line.
